The Hilo Drag Strip
The Hilo Dragstrip is located on the island of Hawaii "The Big Island". It is located in the Panaewa Forest. Turn on to Leilani street that heads to the refuge dump, and contunue on that same road to the track. The road is paved to the track. It is the newest race track in the state of Hawaii.
The Drag Strip opened in 1978. The first Race held at the track was the Memorial Day Drags. The Big Island Auto Club hosted that race that weekend. Drag Racing on the Big Island was held at the Old Kona Airport from 1970's to 1977. The Drag Strip in own by the City and County of Hawaii and maintain by the county. I would have to say it is one of the best Tracks in the State of Hawaii. One Problems it rains alot in Hilo. I was 16 years old when I attended that race. It was a new thing to me and I was so impressed by all those Race Cars. I had a great time watching the race that weekend.
The Hilo Drag Strip was Sanction by NHRA from 1978 to 2004. It is now Sanction by the IHRA. They are Monthly races held by two clubs at Hilo. The Big Island Auto Club (BIAC) and the Big Island Hot Rod Association (BIHRA). They are two Great clubs. Lots of racers get their IHRA License at the BIHRA Race that are held on Saturdays. Also Racers are also able to test and tune the race cars at these races. The BIAC holds their monthly points meet and their big races that are held on Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends. The programs at the BIAC races take most of the time at the races, they is no time for license passes and test and tune. Also the weather plays a big part at the races. If it rains at night or early morning it will take hours to dry the track .
